As of January 1, 2016, I will no longer be updating this page. Thank you to all of you who have sent me information over the last few years. I suspect you can continue to use this list as it stands now as a jumping off point for contest searching for the next few years if you'd like.
Here you go - a truly incomplete but earnest try at making a giant list of fiddle contests all around the country. If you find a mistake in an entry please feel free to let me know. If you know of a contest that I don't have listed, send me the info and I'll include it. Other things to remember...
1. If I guessed at the date based on previous years' contests and the event has not updated its website for this year, I made a note that I was waiting on date confirmation.
2. Please check and double check all the date and location information before you load up the kids and the dog and head out to a contest.
3. Always always always check the rules and regulations of each contest before you enter. Even if you've competed in a contest before, you should check. Contests change rules all the time. And even within regions of the country there can be vast differences between contests.
4. If you have questions about what is considered a breakdown (hoedown) or tune of choice or some other category, make sure to get a definitive answer from the judges before you play.
5. Some states require you to be a resident to compete in their State Championships. Some do not. You might wanna find out before you go.
6. If your songs are a little less than standard, bring chord charts and a really gracious attitude for the accompanists. And then tip them, mightily.
7. And as my dear friend John Francis always says - "You go to the contest, you play your tunes, you take what they give you, then you pack up your fiddle and move on to the next contest." Have fun! That's the main thing. Make sure to do some jamming, meet some new friends, and learn a new tune.
8. If you're planning a fiddle contest, you might want to stay away from the first weekend in August. Just a friendly suggestion...
